Just to amplify what you mentioned and have previously tagged, (particularly at http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lplv62xTTi1qk0kcfo1_500.jpg), I think the key for femme dandy makeup is playing with face (think Rupaul: face face face!)
But the key for me is contouring.

A contour that is slightly darker than your natural skin tone applied under the cheek bones (darker near the ears and lighter on the cheeks); under your jaw; and along the temples is both subtle and strong.
All contours love a highlight-

so a lighter than skin tone blush right on the apples of cheeks; down the line of your nose; and in between your eyebrows can really frame your face. For a more femme-ish look, this highlight can be glittery.
Just that base i think brings makeup home very strong, but very subtle. From there, you can work gender. Dark, smokey eyes can be more on the dapper side. Whereas light/glittery eyes can highlight a twinkly dandy side.
Additionally, as with all things femme dandy, it is about subtleties. Eye lines that turn up (cat eyes) at the edges can add a flighty flair (paired well with ruffle shirts and tight riding pants). Whereas dark, straight lines (paired with suspenders and wide leg pleated pants) can demonstrate a pensive brooding flair.

From “jah.” Thank you for such detailed & nuanced advice! I think this is immensely applicable— I hadn’t personally experimented with contouring at all, but I can certainly see its relationship to gender now that you point it out.
